… A 76-year-old widow was walking home from exercise class at the local senior center.  She was crossing the street in the crosswalk with a “walk” sign when a local water authority truck turned into her, knocking her down, and running over her leg.  The widow sustained devastating injuries to her leg, including a severe break in her knee joint.  She needed surgery with screws and an external device to keep her bones in place while they healed.  She had a long course of recovery both in the hospital and then in a nursing home for rehabilitation. … A 53-year-old corporate attorney was stopped in a routine backup on the interstate on his way to work. Suddenly, he heard a bang behind him and then a second bang.  A large truck with a push bar hit the car behind him, driving it into his car which, in turn, was pushed into the car in front of him. All told, there was a four-vehicle pile up.  The attorney sustained neck injuries but his main problem was a concussion.  He had headaches, blurred vision, dizziness and problems in concentration for several months. … A 42-year-old LPN was participating in a medieval group festival at a local park.  Dressed in her medieval garb, she was driving back to her house when a young man driving the other way crossed the center line, crashing first into another car then the LPN’s car.  The LPN had a congenital condition, a hand deformity called Dupuytren’s Contracture.  This condition prevented her fingers from straightening completely.  As a result of this crash, she broke her wrist.
